“Observations of the Human Animal – 002” by Richard F. Yates

I overheard this snippet of an exchange at the eye clinic yesterday, which bothered me to a greater degree than it should have:

Desk Human: “…you don’t have to bring it back.”

Elderly Female Human Customer: “Well, I read an article on [popular social networking site] about being careful, so… You know.”

That was it, but it was enough to put me into a spin. I’m not suggesting that the fault is with the social networking sites, but the most popular of these have now become a source of information, even to the GRAY-HAIR-SET, which people are using to make important life decisions. Unfortunately, these sites are also frequently used to circulate false, misleading, hoaxed, and biased stories and opinions, which I do not believe the majority of the users are willing or even capable of questioning for factors such as reliability, accuracy, or slant. How many times have we seen that stupid story about the deadly toilet seat spider!?? Folklore is wonderful, but shouldn’t be the basis of important decisions, like where to use the restrooms! BEWARE HUMANS! Check your sources!!! Or don’t. You’ll be that much easier for us to control if you remain ignorant.

As I was leaving the bowling alley today, I overheard a woman intoning this lovely sentiment:

“If he doesn’t stop talking to me like I’m fucking stupid I’m going to fucking reach across that fucking counter and slap him in his fucking face.”

How the individual with whom she was speaking could have possibly reached the conclusion that she was of limited intelligence is anyone’s guess!
