“Bowie” by Richard F. Yates

How come David Bowie isn’t the King of the world?

“My Generation” by Richard F. Yates

We are a generation of losers… Losers who all get trophies for “TRYING!”

“Ultimate Values” by Richard F. Yates

Blah… Sitting on the floor by the heater vent again, although today it feels too warm. My eyes are bleary, and my guts are gurgling like a—like a thing that gurgles quite a bit. And it almost feels like I’m getting a back of the neck head ache. Riveting! This is first class writing! Notice how I’m questioning the value of what I’m doing? It’s probably an important part of any “creative” activity, asking yourself the question: Is this worthwhile? Humans have little time to spend on this planet, and they shouldn’t waste their time—too much of their time—on trivial or pointless acts. Unless they are INTENTIONALLY trivial and pointless acts meant to disturb or upset the fabric of society. Then the actions have the ILLUSION of being pointless, but their very pointlessness becomes the point.

But I was talking about wasting time, not engaging in social critique.

Tired. Very tired. Totally tired. (If you haven’t watched SQUARE PEGS, the old television program, I recommend it. It’s incredibly bad, but in a way that I enjoy.)

Totally.

Waste? Is it all a waste? You must ask yourself this question. MUST! But your answer may be different than mine. It all boils down to “ultimate values.” What motivates you to continue to exist? Have you ever thought about it? Are you just doing what you THINK you should be doing, or did you look at the world, carefully, and try to decide what your ultimate place within the world is going to be?

“No Window Next Door (A Poem with Origins in the Shower)” by Seth T. Channeler

Today I am immobile
Sweaty for Spring
My eyes cross (they are so angry
with all of you that they can’t
see straight)
I would consider myself a king of
infinite space (where it not that
I have bad bills)
When pulled in all directions
by an equal amount of force
there is an overwhelming but uninteresting inaction
The paint dries on my fingers
The ink withers in my pen
The dancin’ shoes refuse to sparkle
And the Tax Man comes to call
His Black Dog, Death, is barking
in my front lawn
(But I have no more shoes to throw…)
(None that sparkle, anyway)
Why must they tear down
before they construct? (Both actions are too loud)
The planks of History (once marble)
are now boards of chipped and pressed, recycled, plastic containers
with the advertising logos all scrambled but still affixed.

“Born Rich” by Richard F. Yates

If you weren’t born rich, then you just weren’t trying very hard.
